• 17 schools from 17 countries across Europe won The Entrepreneurial School (TES) Awards 2016, a national and European recognition of the best schools championing entrepreneurship education.
• Their representatives met in Riga on 22 September on the occasion of JA Europe’s event ‘Celebrating Entrepreneurship Education in Europe’ including the TES Awards ceremony to present their entrepreneurial achievements and receive the European Award.
[Riga, 23 September 2016] For the second edition of The Entrepreneurial School Awards, 17 entrepreneurial schools across Europe have been selected at national level for their entrepreneurial vision and outstanding implementation of entrepreneurship education programmes. The selection criteria include the schools’ strategy for entrepreneurship education, specific resource allocations, teachers’ training and the engagement of the local community and business sector.
The celebration took place on 22 September in Riga, in the presence of several representatives from education ministries. Teachers and headmasters from the17 schools in Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom were present to receive the recognition.
While the labour market requires more and more innovative and entrepreneurial skills, less than 20% of students have had an entrepreneurship experience by the time they finish school. Delivering the right skillset for tomorrow’s jobs requires a stronger focus on teacher training and entrepreneurial teaching methods.
“The support and participation from so many national ministries of education is a big step forward. This is what the European Parliament has been calling for in order to foster an entrepreneurial culture among young people; it is also exactly the kind of encouragement that the business community and other stakeholders need in order to continue to expand their work with schools,” said Caroline Jenner, CEO of JA Europe.
By recognising schools’ entrepreneurial endeavours, The Entrepreneurial School Awards contribute to the objectives of the New Skills Agenda for Europe launched in June 2016, focusing notably on quality education, teachers’ training and entrepreneurial skills. “We are delighted to support this initiative which recognises the benefits of working collaboratively: enabling pupils to learn with each other in new ways, supporting teachers to share and develop their practice across disciplines, and encouraging schools to be innovative in their partnership-working,” confirmed Sophie Beernaerts, Head of Unit “Schools and Educators; multilingualism” at the European Commission.
The Entrepreneurial School
JA Europe led the consortium behind The Entrepreneurial School (TES), an EU project which over the last 3 years has also produced Europe’s first Virtual Guide to Entrepreneurial Learning targeting teachers. While the EU project has ended, JA Europe continues to provide training and assistance to entrepreneurial teachers across Europe.

Mater Salvatorisinstituut Kapellen, Kapellen

Entrepreneurship is a highly important cornerstones of Mater Salvatoris School, and over the last 20 years, they have developed and integrated an impactful entrepreneurship education strategy. More than 350 students participate in different activities every year in a progression model integrated in the curricula. A school policy in entrepreneurship education is in place including a train-the-trainer programme, investments in the teaching coaches by workshops and trainings.
Mater Salvatoris is considered as an entrepreneurship education role model in Belgium Flanders and recognised as a Vlajo Ambassador School.
Karlínská obchodní akademie a VOŠE, Prague

Entrepreneurship and especially social entrepreneurship is part of the school’s DNA, embedded in all topics and activities of the school, which has been working with JA for over 20 years. It aims to become a national leading educational institution in social entrepreneurship.
Among others, the school management enables the mini companies to use the school premises for their business activities. The school has financial resources allocated for conferences on the topic, cooperation with real businesses such as for visits of entrepreneurs in the school as well as for student visits to the companies.
Lyngby Gymnasium, Lyngby

Lyngby Gymnasium does not teach about entrepreneurship education, it does entrepreneurship education. All students learn how to develop innovative ideas, produce and test prototypes and to communicate these ideas to external partners. This pioneer school is the first upper secondary school of innovation (i.e. STX-gymnasium) in Denmark. By implementing the upcoming national reform of the upper secondary schools of Denmark, the school is already considered as a role model. No other school is teaching all classes and levels so systematically to be entrepreneurs. Despite the traditional curricular and non-entrepreneurial focus of the final exams at national level, its students generally have better grades than the national average.
Kiviõli 1. Secondary School, Ida-Virumaa

Kiviõli 1. Secondary School started with JA programmes in 2001 in upper secondary school. Very quickly also other school levels were engaged and JA programmes are currently implemented at all school levels. Since 2006 the school has been part of ‘Estonian network of Enterpreneurial Schools’ which aims at integrating entrepreneurship education at all levels and in all topics of the curriculum. The school received a Silver Award, recognising its entrepreneurial achievements in Estonia. According to their last self- evaluation, 75% of its teachers are trained every year.
Ulvilan lukio, Ulvila

Ulvila high-school has been a very active entrepreneurial school since 2005, putting a lot of time and effort to train the entire teaching staff as well as the students. Entrepreneurial thinking is integrated into the curriculum. The school has been following the regional strategy from 2011.
The school has a visionary group that is focussed on including the local community and business sector in order to enrich its entrepreneurial education. The core team involves local businesses, the mayor, a representative from the university, a middle school principle, a representative from the local entrepreneurial company as well as the local JA network.

Entrepreneurship education activities involve all teachers and students within the school. Based on contents from the NFTE (Network for teaching entrepreneurship) curriculum and the JUNIOR/JA programmes, the school focuses on ‘Ein Brückenschlag zum Beruf’ (linking education with profession). Teacher training is also a priority for the school as they exempt teachers from classes for some teacher trainings and programmes. Moreover, the school organises advanced training with professors like Prof. Dr. Sven Ripsas (Professor of entrepreneurship at the University of Economics and law Berlin). Since 2010, they establish students’ company in charge of catering managed by the 9th/10th grades students. They work together to run this mini company all year long. This supports competence at various different levels.
IIS Pacinotti-Archimede school, Rome
Represented by Valeria Santagata, Headmaster and Diego Flores, Teacher
All students in the school have the opportunity to do the Mini-Company while they do their technical activities in the fab-lab. This year more than 380 students took part in the Mini-Company Programme from 17 classes, supported by 30 teachers. The school is very entrepreneurial and, thanks to its own effort, it has been able to set up its own fab-lab and equip it with several 3d printers, cutters and materials to train the students on robotics and other technical activities.
In 2015, the Ministry of Education recognised the school as one of the excellences in the Italian school system and has appointed it to take part in the ICEE Project.
Jelgava Spīdola Gymnasium, Jelgava

Jelgava Spīdola Gymnasium is partnering with JA Latvia since its foundation. The school has been implementing the economics and commercial science programme since 1994 and has had more than 400 student companies established. 20% of all teachers are working as mentors for student company programme in the school and other teachers are involved in entrepreneurship education as consultants in their teaching field. A teacher of economics, Inta Jornina, has been nominated by JA Latvia as The Best Teacher of Economics in Latvia. The school is also involved in four different projects of European Union that are related to entrepreneurship.
Kaunas “Saules” gymnasium, Kaunas

The school has been supporting entrepreneurship education activities at the gymnasium for over a decade now, implementing continuous and systematic work in the field of entrepreneurial education, including lessons, extra-curriculum activities and international projects. Each year at least 100 students and 5 teachers participate in entrepreneurship education programmes.
The school also initiates entrepreneurship activities involving other schools (both teachers and students) such as an annual event “Generation of Business Ideas” and is an active part of the organising committee of the international trade fair of student companies in Kaunas.
Kirkop Secondary School, Kirkop

Kirkop secondary firmly believes that entrepreneurship equips the learner with the knowledge and skills to desire, seek, recognise and utilise available opportunity to do something new, to create wealth for self and others and to contribute effectively to society. All the staff is on board, embraces this vision and practices these objectives across the curriculum.
Among others, the school runs its own canteen, has created also a kitchen garden run by the staff and students about to drop out, runs also a successful dramatic company, and offers job shadowing opportunities.
Agrupamento de Escolas de Alvalade, Lisbon

The school has a strong focus on the implementation of the JA Portugal programmes. About 700 students from different grades took part in those programmes this year. In addition, the school promotes several activities during the year related to entrepreneurship education, involving teachers, companies and former students.
The school was involved from the beginning in the development and dissemination of the TES Guide. The school is proud of its continuous effort to be a transversal programme implementer in several areas and age groups.
Colegiul Economic Partenie, Oradea

“Partenie Cosma” Economic High School is among the first schools in Romania which have joined JA Romania in promoting a modern economical education motivated by the requirements of a modern market economy. In 2015-2016 school year 90% of the teachers and students have taken part in relevant entrepreneurial education activities.
The school invests a lot in teacher training and continuous development. It also ensures their participation in international projects (Leonardo, Comenius, Erasmus+) focused on entrepreneurial education.
Multidisciplinary Lyceum 1799, Moscow

Entrepreneurship education is reaching all students and teachers of the Lyceum, being integrated into the curriculum at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Entrepreneurship is taught both as separate subjects (JA programmes) and within other subjects, both obligatory and elective.
The consistent and active implementation of entrepreneurship education has brought excellent outcomes in 2015-16 academic year. Students who participated in a variety of entrepreneurship education programmes demonstrated increased level of entrepreneurial competences and achievements recognized by special awards, both at national and international levels.
Gymnázium, Poštová 9, Košice

Entrepreneurship education programmes have been implemented in Gymnázium, Poštová 9, Košice for more than 10 years, and the school has created long term high quality conditions for the development of students´ entrepreneurship competences. Its professionalism in this field is known and confirmed by the students´ achieved success. The school is a member of and has several projects in cooperation with Kosice IT Valley, which plays a significant role in the development of IT in the region.
Bell-lloc School, Girona

One of the guiding principles of Bell-lloc School is to remove the walls and to be able to interact as much as possible with the local community and the business sector. Seven years ago the school established entrepreneurial education as one of its main priorities and today the school has become a major reference in the fields of entrepreneurial education and internationalisation and conducts international venture projects with students and teachers from several countries.
Robert College, Istanbul

35 students and 4 advisors of Robert College Junior Achievement group are organising various local and international events such as Entrepreneurs’ Thursdays, Remixopolis (Innovation camp), attending at least three international Trade Fairs in a year and starting up new products / companies every year as “Charged Aid”. RC Junior Achievement students got “creativity award” this year at Trade Fair in Kaunas with Charger Aid product. The school offers Entrepreneurial Skills Pass (ESP) opportunities for the members of JA students. 7 students are certificated this summer.
Highcrest Academy, High Wycombe

Highcrest Academy has worked exceptionally hard in promoting all aspects of entrepreneurship throughout its curriculum and to offer all pupils the opportunity to benefit from learning prospects in this area. At every opportunity the school will enter into dialogue with organisations and local businesses to work with and help students learn the vital employability skills. They are happy to try novel ways of introducing entrepreneurship to all years in the school.
